Roadrunners 77, Trinity Valley 66
When the shots aren’t working, the defense had better.
Angelina College’s Roadrunners overcame a rough shooting night by playing solid defense and converting clutch free throws to down Trinity Valley College 77-66 Wednesday night at Shands Gymnasium.
In a grind-it-out, every-possession-counts type of game, the Roadrunners managed to make the bigger plays down the stretch. Kyndall Powell, Isaiah Bailey and Robert Lewis combined to convert nine free throws in the final 90 seconds to lift the ‘Runners, now 2-1 in conference play.
With both teams playing lock-down defense, neither offense could generate much in the shooting category: AC shot just 37 percent from the floor – including a 1-for-17 night from three-point range – while the Cardinals fared no better, shooting just 31 percent and 3-of-20 from long range.
The difference in a tight game proved to be the rebounding edge: The Roadrunners won the board war over the bigger Cardinals, grabbing 54 rebounds to TVCC’s 42. Twenty of AC’s points came on second chances sparked by offensive rebounds.
Bailey led AC with 21 points, followed by Trent Brinkley and Gary Blackston with 11 points each. Robert Lewis added 10, and Brinkley hauled down 12 rebounds to earn a double-double.
The Cardinals’ Amaad Wainright led his team with 15 points; Hyron Edwards added 13 and Ryan Preston 10 in the loss.
The Roadrunners close out the first semester with an overall record of 10-3. AC will next play at McLennan College on December 30. Game time is 6 p.m.
Lady Roadrunners 77, Bossier Parish College 66
Angelina College’s Karley McHenry needed just one game to eclipse her career high in scoring for her young collegiate career.
After posting a 20-point game Saturday at Tyler College, McHenry went for 25 in Wednesday’s game against Bossier Parish College, leading the Lady Roadrunners to a 77-66 win over the Lady Cavaliers.
McHenry nailed six three pointers in the win, dropping shots from all around the arc. La’Neique Nealey added 19 points and a whopping 21 rebounds – her ninth double-double of the season – and Charisma Shepherd hit three treys to total 12 points in the win.
The Lady Cavs got 14 points each from Ashlyn Jacobs and Savannah Thomas.
AC scored 23 points off 23 Lady Cavalier turnovers; the Lady ‘Runners finished with 10 steals in the game.
The Lady Roadrunners (8-3, 3-1) will travel to LSU-Eunice on Saturday for a non-conference game to close out the semester. Game time is 5 p.m.
