LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

An Angelina County jury found a Zavalla man who is known to be the owner of the community known to law enforcement as “the compound” guilty of a state-jail felony delivery of a controlled substance charge Tuesday.

Walter Barkley Metcalf, 52, stood trial for the possession of a controlled substance charge in Judge Bob Inselmann’s 217th Judicial District courtroom. Now that Metcalf has been convicted of the crime, Inselmann will determine his punishment after a pre-sentencing investigation.

Metcalf was one of three suspects arrested by Angelina County Sheriff’s Office deputies as a result of two separate meth investigations back in October of 2015.

ACSO deputies and Pct. 3 Constable Chad Wilson arrested Metcalf at a home in the 300 block of John Keely Road in Zavalla for one count of delivery of a controlled substance on Oct. 5, 2015.

Metcalf was released from the Angelina County Jail on Oct. 6 after he posted a bail amount of $5,000.

Metcalf was also one of many witnesses who testified at the recent murder trial for Tommy Lee Granger, who was found not guilty in the 2015 stabbing death of Jesse Keller. The stabbing death occurred at “the compound.”

During the trial, several witnesses said Metcalf was a known drug user. Metcalf admitted on the stand that he had gotten in trouble with the law for delivery of a controlled substance. He later testified to hearing a gunshot before Keller was stabbed to death.
