LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Here's a look at the top stories from KTRE.com and our KTRE-9 mobile app.

Inappropriate relationships between teachers and students were a recurring heading in East Texas this year with at least 7 inappropriate teacher-student relationship. It's a problem statewide, the Texas Education Agency reported in May that this year they had investigated over 162 cases of student-teacher relationships.

SPRING FLOODS

The spring brought some major flooding to part of Deep East Texas, mostly to our neighbors in Jasper County. The federal government and neighbors helped these East Texans get back on their feet from the Spring floods.

As the spring semester ended at Stephen F. Austin State University, tragedy hit -- with the death of three current and former students. Police suspected speed was a factor.

FATAL ATV WRECK

Despite happening miles away in Colorado, this fatal ATV accident rocked the Nacogdoches community. Pastor Ryan King and his brother-in-law Bryson Adkison were remembers with vigils and memorials.

Woodville ISD students were on their way to a track meet in March when the bus they were riding in rolled over multiple times in a ditch. Nobody was injured.

TRINITY ISD VAN FATAL WRECK

In early December, a school van was hit from behind by another driver. The wreck killed Journey Magness, a Trinity County deputy's daughter. The community rallied around the Magness family.

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION

It was a big election year, while the attention was on Trump and Clinton for the top job in D-C. East Texas got some attention over a state board election, with the controversial comments of Republican candidate Mary Lou Brunner. Lufkin ISD's Keven Ellis won the election in November.

LUFKIN ISD UIL ENROLLMENT ERROR

Lufkin ISD's UIL status came under review in 2016 -- after allegations of an error in their enrollment numbers. Over the summer, the UIL cleared the school district for the error.

In a tearful goodbye, Coach Brad Underwood left the Stephen F. Austin State University community as head basketball coach. The program quickly hired Coach Kyle Keller to replace Underwood.

THOMAS WALKUP SIGNS WITH NBA

We can't talk about the Lumberjacks without a mention of Thomas Walkup, who back in September signed with the "Windy City Bulls," a franchise of the Chicago Bulls development team.

The oldest town in Texas celebrated a big birthday, too. The city of Nacogdoches celebrated with a year-long observance, Nac300 organizers capped off the year with a big celebration in November.

AWARD-WINNING NEWSCAST

KTRE took home a big award this year, our newscast was awarded "Best Newscast" by the Texas AP Broadcaster. A huge thank you for all our viewers who keep us caring, committed, proud of East Texas.

In a special East Texas Throwback, we took you inside Jasper County's Blue Hole, a privately owned natural spring. The owner has thought about opening up the Blue Hole for East Texans to enjoy.
