SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Four days into the 2017, the new San Augustine chief deputy is getting his feet wet with the role.
He's just one of the additions to a whole new administration San Augustine County Sheriff Robert Cartwright appointed.
Chief Deputy Sheriff John Welch has almost 20 years of law enforcement experience under his belt, which started in San Augustine. He wants people to know that he and the sheriff have an "open-door" policy.
"The main goal for 2107 is for the people of this county to be confident in the sheriff's office, have a good rapport with the community, and have them know that they can come see us anytime day or night," Welch said.
The chief deputy says more changes will come including an upgraded booking system and new technology in the department as the year continues.
