LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Texas Department of Transportation crews will be pre-treating roads in the nine-county area included in TxDOT's Lufkin District for the rest of today because of the possibility of freezing rain, sleet, or snow later tonight.
"Our maintenance departments will begin treating our normal problem areas throughout our nine counties-typically overpasses and bridges-with a salt water solution that is designed to lower the temperature at which water freezes on the roadway surface," said Rhonda Oaks, a spokeswoman for TxDOT.
Oaks said the district's maintenance departments will be begin treating the nine-county area's normal problem areas, which typically include overpasses and bridges, with a salt water solution that is designed to lower the temperature at which water freezes on the road surface.
"Our roads are wet already today, and with expected temperatures falling below freezing and rain in the forecast, we want to prepare for whatever occurs in our East Texas weather," Oaks said.
Oaks said motorists should be alert, drive with the possible weather conditions in mind, and watch for icy patches. She said if you hit an icy patch, don't hit the brakes. Steer slowly to a stop.
"If ice accumulates on county roads or in isolated areas, motorists are advised to stay off roadways until temperatures rise above freezing," Oaks said.
