San Augustine Co. chief deputy: Man beat up, injured grandparents

SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Deputies with the Tyler County Sheriff's Office arrested a 23-year-old man in connection to allegations that he beat up and injured his grandparents early Sunday morning.

The grandfather was airlifted to a hospital in Nacogdoches for treatment for injuries he received with Chandler Crowson, his grandson, allegedly hit him in the head with a cane.

Crowson, of San Augustine, was arrested and charged with four felonies - two counts of injury to the elderly, one count of assault-family violence causing bodily injury, and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

San Augustine County Chief Deputy John Welch said that the alleged incident occurred on County Road 404 in Broaddus. The initial 911 call that said Crowson had beaten up his grandparents came in at about 3:30 a.m.

Welch said TCSO deputies picked Crowson up in Tyler County on outstanding warrants connected to the alleged assault. He fled to that county in a silver GMC pickup after the alleged assault, a press release stated.

Welch said Crown's 74-year-old grandmother was sent to CHI St. Luke's Memorial Hospital in Lufkin. The 73-year-old grandfather was airlifted to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious head trauma, a press release stated.
