TYLER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Deputies with the Tyler County Sheriff's Office have arrested a Willis man accused of assaulting the mother of his child and putting their child in danger along the way.

James Arnnett McGowen Jr., 23, is charged with burglary of a habitation with intent to commit another felony, endangering a child, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the arrest affidavit, a deputy was dispatched to the 200 block of County Road 4262. When he arrived, a woman said the father of her child kicked in the door to her home. The deputy reported the frame of the door was destroyed with pieces of the frame lying in the floor in the kitchen.

The woman said McGowen had dropped their daughter off and told her "you want to play games, let's play." She said he then grabbed her and dragged down the driveway. He then pulled a knife at her and said "If you are not going to be with me you're not going to be with anyone," she said.

The woman said she was able to break loose and run to the door to pick up her daughter, who had been knocked out of her arms. She said once she picked her up, she tried to close the door to the home, but McGowen was trying to keep that from happening.

The woman said she was able to get the door closed and locked, but then McGowen began kicking the door and screamed "let's play." He then kicked the door open while the daughter was standing near it, according to the affidavit.

The woman said McGowen ran to his car and left when he saw she was calling law enforcement.

The sheriff's office obtained a warrant for McGowen's arrest on July 10. He was booked in the jail last week.
