NACOGDCOHES, Texas (Press Release) – The Ladyjacks are on what could be a historical run for 2017. They are 12-2 overall and hold a 3-0 first place spot in the Southland Conference. In their Win-Loss percentage, Stephen F. Austin is at 85.7%, which ranks them as 17th in the nation. SFA now holds six top 20 rankings within the NCAA for various categories. However, Thursday’s opponent Abilene Christian is not without their own accolades. ACU is the 2015-16 Southland Conference regular season Champions after a 17-1 run last season. The Wildcats, like SFA, are undefeated in conference so far, and have preseason losses to only big schools like No.2 Baylor, Texas A&M, and Mizzou.
The two teams, SFA and ACU, have only met six times in their program history. A majority of those were in the 1970s before Abilene Christian joined the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks lead the series 5-1 with SFA on a five game winning streak until ACU upset the Ladyjacks in an 85-70 rout last year in the Johnson Coliseum.
Last time out: Last Thursday night against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, senior Taylor Ross won her thirteenth double-digit game. She had 14 points on the night and four assists. Senior Brentney Branch led the Ladyjacks in the points column, collecting 17 points and five assists. Redshirt junior Stevi Parker tied for number of boards with senior Adrienne Lewis. They each had seven rebounds. Branch and Parker had three steals each, which helped expand SFA’s steals per game number to 12.2 putting them solidly 13th in the nation for steals.
Scouting Abilene Christian: The Wildcats are coming off an 83-76 win over Central Arkansas. Senior forward Suzzy Dimba collected several career highs that night including a career high 28 points and her 31st career double-double, going 9-15 in the field and 6-6 at the line. Dimba’s twin sister, Lizzy Dimba, had a season-high 20 point game with six rebounds. As a team, the Wildcats were unstoppable beyond the arc going 13-26 (50%) and outrebounding UCA 38-21.
The Ladyjacks have their work cut out for them on Thursday night, but after the Abilene rout, SFA will return home to host the Nicholls Colonels. Tipoff will be another double-header Saturday with the women playing at 3:30 p.m. CT and the men following at 6:00 p.m. CT. Both games will be live streamed on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app.
