LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - During Tuesday night's meeting, the Lufkin City Council approved an amendment that gave funding to a tax incentive from the city's 3B Economic Development Corporation for Rex Perry Hyundai to build a dealership in town.
"Hyundai was pleased with us," said Rex Perry, the owner of the Rex Perry Hyundai dealership in Nacogdoches. "We were very sales effective, but it was mosty in Nacogdoches County. And being a realist, it's gotta be hard to get a lot of folks to drive past a bunch of nice dealerships in Lufkin and come to Nacogdoches to buy a Hyundai."
Perry said even though Hyundai makes great cars, buyers have to pass a lot of good dealerships in Lufkin to get to his Nacogdoches dealership.
"I actually got Hyundai to split the market," Perry said.
Assistant City Manager Steve Floyd said the City of Lufkin is in the process of improving a street on the back side of FM 58 that will give the dealership and entrance and exit. Floyd also said that Perry hopes to start construction on the new dealership soon.
Rex Perry Hyundai will be located on Medford Drive between Lowe's and Southern Chrysler.
Floyd said Lufkin's 4B Economic Development Corporation approved the tax incentive about a year ago. However, the project was put on hold while Perry worked on another project. Trees have been cleared on the five-acre property, so construction can begin, Floyd said.
Perry said that he wants to have the new building completed by this time next year. he also complimented City of Lufkin officials for making road improvements around the property.
