SABINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A father and son duo from the Bronson area of Sabine County turned themselves in at the sheriff's office Monday after they allegedly tried and failed to torch a Chrysler PT Cruiser on State Highway 103 and then left it there on Jan. 18.
James Ambers Retherford, 52, and Jesse James Retherford, 22, have since been released the Sabine County Jail. Each man was charged with state-jail felony illegal dumping between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds.
James Retherford's bail amount was set at 5,000, and Jesse Retherford's bail amount was set at $3,000.
Chief Deputy George Griffith with the Sabine County Sheriff's Office said that the two men tried to burn a red 2008 PT Cruiser. However, only a small portion of the carpet on its floorboard caught fire, and the two men left the car on the side of the road.
"They never had any intention of coming back to get it," Griffith said.
Griffith said SCSO responded to a 911 call about the incident and went to check it out. After a little investigation, they determined that James and Jesse Retherford were the ones that parked the PT Cruiser and tried to set it on fire. The deputies then obtained arrest warrants for the two men.
Although Griffith said the sheriff's office has a pretty good idea why the two men tried to burn the PT Cruiser, he declined to go into any details.
