LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - CHI St.Luke's Memorial Health employees wore red to work on Wednesday as a way to kick off the National Heart Month campaign.
The hospital employees wore red to bring awareness to cardiovascular diseases, which claim the lives of nearly half a million women per year. That is almost one per minute.
The hospital also presented a $2,500 check to the Angelina Heart Alliance. The money will go to purchase a new AED machine to help with heart attack victims at the Boys and Girls Club.
"We find these events happening in children and teens,"said Jarrad Grumbles, the president of the Angelina Heart Alliance. "A lot of them are doing activities, and the first time they know they have a heart problem is when they collapse. An AED if used very quickly can change the chances of someone surviving."
The money will also be used to go back into other community events throughout the county.
