LUFKIN, TX (Press Release)- The pitchers are starting to hit their spots. The batters are hitting everything else.
The Angelina College Roadrunner baseball team enters Friday’s home doubleheader with Cedar Valley College with a modest two-game winning streak. The two wins were nice, but the most encouraging news for the coaching staff was the way those two wins came together.
In the first win over Western Texas – a team that scored 18 runs in a game earlier that day – AC pitchers Bailey Holstein and Jarod Sprinkle teamed up to hold the high-scoring Westerners to four runs in the Roadrunners’ 5-4 win. Their efforts set up a big finale, with Tucker Redden driving home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for AC’s first walk-off win of the season.
The very next day, ‘Runner hurlers Grant Cox, Cody Cash and Brett Rogers held the Westerners to a single run, while the AC bats exploded for 23 runs on 22 hits. Tony Lima blasted a grand slam and a two-run double to finish with six RBI; Jacob Finke hit his third homer of the season; and Josh Elvir went 5-for-5 in the game. Dylan Rivers and Blake Lazarine each added three hits. Jesse Cravy drove in four runs in the win.
The ‘Runner offense has raised its team batting average to just a shade below .300, and AC hitters are second in the conference in extra-base hits. The pitching staff has combined to strike out 62 hitters in 70 innings. The staff’s ERA is also second in the conference.
The Roadrunners and Suns will on Friday play a pair of seven-inning games, with the opener scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Roadrunner Field on the Angelina College campus.
