NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Nacogdoches High School has raised at least $1,000 for the American Heart Association.
It was accomplished through a friendly, but competitive, event called Heart Healthy Hearty Race. For the last several Thursdays designated teachers and students had 15 minutes to run through the halls and collect money for the cause. Departments competed to collect the most money. Every penny added up.
"Sometimes in my classes I've been asking during the day if they wanted to contribute because it's for such a good cause," said Lisa Fuller, a teacher in the NHS Math Department. "Plus, it makes a little rivalry among the teachers and the kids like seeing us run around, basically."
The students had a real-life event to spur them on in the contest. The event was dedicated to librarian Paula Ewton who survived a heart attack over the Christmas holidays.
