Joaquin man dies in auto-pedestrian crash in Shelby County

JOAQUIN, TX (KTRE) -

A 65-year-old man was killed Thursday night after he was struck by a pickup as he was trying to cross State Highway 84 in Joaquin.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the pedestrian has been identified as Joseph Olenik, of Joaquin.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the collision occurred at about 8:35 p.m. Thursday. The press release stated that Olenik was crossing SH 84 when he was struck by a westbound 1999 Toyota driven by Charles Williams, 68, of Logansport, Louisiana.

Justice of the Peace Margie Anderson pronounced Olenik dead at the scene at 9 p.m.

Williams was not injured in the crash, the press release stated.

The crash is still under investigation.
