NACOGDOCHES, Texas (Press Release) – Stephen F. Austin women's basketball senior Taylor Ross has been chosen as the Southland Conference Player of the Year and to the All-Conference First Team, and Redshirt junior Stevi Parker earned a spot on the All-Conference Third Team, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Ross was honored with the title of Player of the Year after establishing herself as one of the best offensive attackers in the league during the 2016-17 season. This is her third all-conference selection of her career after being selected to the First Team last year and Second Team all-conference as a sophomore.
After 29 games played this season, the Pflugerville native, found her way back to the top of the statistical boards with top mark rankings in the conference in free-throws made and attempted. She is third in conference for assists (139), assists per game (4.8), final points (561), and points per game (19.3).
The 5-6 senior scored in double figures in 28 of the 29 games on the year, and also totaled 20 points or more on 14 different occasions. Her season-high was 30 points against New Orleans on February 23.
Ross has also been recognized throughout the year on the national level for her achievements on the floor. She ranked as high as third in the nation for her total free-throws made and attempted, 191-240. She has been near perfect at the line during five different contests. On December 3, against UT-Arlington, the senior reset a pair of program records for free-throw makes and attempts in a single game. She made 17 from the charity stripe and shot 21 attempts.
Ross was selected as the CBS College Sports Madness Southland Player of the week two different times during the season, after a terrific week in February against Nicholls and Lamar, averaging 21 points and six rebounds, Ross earned the title of the Mid-Major College Sports Madness Player of the week.
Taylor Ross is the second Ladyjack in a row to win the SLC Player of the Year after Porsha Roberts won the title in the 2014-15 season. Ross is the eleventh Ladyjack player to earn the honor.
Her teammate Stevi Parker, was tabbed the All-Conference honor after she started all 29 games this season. Parker leads the Ladyjacks this season for her 242 rebounds (8.3 per game). She ranks fifth in the Southland Conference for her action on the boards and second for defensive rebounds alone.
The product of Bixby, Okla. totaled seven double-double this season, with her highest being at home against Abilene Christian. She posted 31 points and brought down 18 rebounds that night.
