JASPER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Deputies with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 26-year-old man earlier this month in connection to allegations that he tried to sexually assault a woman at her home by grabbing her and forcefully simulating sexual intercourse with her on March 1.

Michael Ray Sonnier, of Kirbyville, was booked into the Jasper County Jail on a second-degree felony attempted sexual assault charge. He has since been released from the jail after he posted a bail amount of $10,000.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim came to the sheriff’s office on March 13 and spoke to a JCSO deputy about a sexual assault that occurred at her home on County Road 462 in Kirbyville on March 1.

The alleged victim told the deputy that about a week before the act occurred, she was at the Valero in Kirbyville when she noticed a man she recognized as Sonnier arrive at the same location. Then when she left the business, Sonnier followed her to her house and asked to see the Jeep she had bought recently, the affidavit stated.

While the woman was showing Sonnier the Jeep, a friend of her family dropped by to borrow a pressure washer. The woman told the deputy that when Sonnier realized the two of them were no longer alone, he said he had to leave, the affidavit stated.

“[The victim] stated him leaving in a hurry seemed to be odd behavior for Sonnier,” the affidavit stated.

According to the affidavit, the victim told the JCSO deputy that Sonnier came to her house at about 3:30 p.m. on March 1 uninvited and asked her if she knew of anyone that wanted to buy his truck. After the woman told Sonnier no, he asked her if he could use the restroom.

The victim told the deputy that she let Sonnier go inside her home and use the guest bathroom, the affidavit. While he was in the house, she stayed outside on the porch looking through a package that had just been delivered.

A short time later, Sonnier called the woman and said there was no toilet paper in the bathroom. The affidavit stated. She told the JCSO deputy that she told Sonnier there was because she had recently put some there. Sonnier allegedly insisted there was none, and the victim assumed that her daughter, who lives nearby, had borrowed some toilet paper from the guest bathroom.

The woman told the JCSO deputy that she went to the master bathroom and got a roll of toilet paper that she intended to throw into the guest bathroom. When the victim went through the hall way to the guest bathroom, she noticed that it was dark and that Sonnier was crouched down hiding, and he was only wearing his underwear, the affidavit stated.

At that point, Sonnier allegedly grabbed the woman around her waist and started simulating sexual intercourse by putting his genitals on her. The victim told the JCSO deputy that Sonnier then took her to the living room and threw her on an Ottoman-style chair, the affidavit stated.

Sonnier allegedly then started simulating sex again. The victim told the JCSO deputy that she kept telling Sonnier to stop, but he refused, the affidavit stated. She also allegedly tried to fight him off by trying to push him away, but was unable to do so because Sonnier is much larger than she is.

According to the affidavit, the victim was finally able to get away from Sonnier and went outside. The woman told the deputy that she told Sonnier to get dressed and leave. However, Sonnier allegedly followed her to the front door and exposed himself to her.

The victim told the JCSO deputy that she spoke to her son-in-law about what happened, and he said that he told Sonnier to stay away from the woman. On the next day, the victim talked to an officer with the Kirbyville Police Department about the alleged sexual assault.

On March 11, Sonnier showed up at an event the victim was attending and cornered her, the affidavit stated. He allegedly told her he was sorry for disrespecting her and that “he was out of his mind that day.”

Sonnier came to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office on March 13 to give his version of what happened on March 1. According to the affidavit, he admitted to encountering the woman at the Kirbyville Valero about a week before the alleged sexual assault. He also allegedly said that as she was standing by her Jeep, he picked her up and simulated sex with her.

Sonnier claimed the victim just laughed and told him he was a nut, the affidavit stated,

According to the affidavit, Sonnier told a JCSO lieutenant an account of what happened on March 1 that was very similar to the victim’s version. He allegedly told the lieutenant that he had a “stupid idea” when he was in the woman’s guest bathroom.

Sonnier told the lieutenant that when the woman brought the toilet paper to the guest bathroom, he picked her up and simulated sex with her, the affidavit stated. When the JCSO lieutenant asked how the victim reacted, Sonnier alleged said she was laughing.

During the interview, Sonnier also said that when he slipped and fell onto the Ottoman and tried to keep from landing on the victim, the affidavit stated. He also allegedly said he tried to kiss the woman on the neck as he was going down.

Later, Sonnier claimed that after he and the woman got up, they started dancing together, the affidavit stated. He told the JCSO lieutenant that the victim kept saying he was a nut and laughing the whole time.

Sonnier also allegedly admitted to exposing himself to the woman before he got dressed and left.
