NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

A 43-year-old Nacogdoches woman accepted a plea bargain deal of three years of probation for stabbing a man in the stomach during an argument at an apartment complex on Ellington Street in April of 2016.

LaDonna Michelle Barlow appeared in Judge Edwin Klein’s 420 Judicial District Court Monday for a plea bargain hearing. As part of the plea bargain, Barlow, pleaded guilty to an aggravated assault charge.

“Even though the victim didn't want to press charges, Ms. Barlow doesn't just get to walk away from this ‘scott free,’” said Andrew Jones, an assistant prosecutor for the Nacogdoches County District Attorney’s Office. “This was a reckless act and, thankfully, no one required medical treatment. While we do not think she intended to stab the victim in this case, she was reckless about her actions. It happened and she's going to have to successfully complete probation if she wants to stay out of prison.”

In addition to having to serve three years of probation, Barlow will be required to pay a $700 fine, complete 200 hours of community service, and complete a drug and alcohol abuse evaluation and follow any treatment recommendations, according to Jones. The assistant prosecutor said that Barlow will also have to attend counseling sessions for drug and/or alcohol abuse. She will also be evaluated for the mental health caseload.

“Ms. Barlow suffers from mental illness, and when that illness is coupled with alcohol and/or drugs it has an amplifying effect on her behavior,” Jones said. “If you take that into account with the fact that the victim never wanted to press charges to begin with and could not be located to testify at trial, our office wanted to at least ensure the underlying cause of why she did what she did is treated.”

According  a previous East Texas News story, the Nacogdoches Police Department’s daily activity report, NPD officers responded to a disturbance at an apartment in the 300 block of Ellington Street at about 3:51 a.m. on April 4, 2016.

When the officers got to the scene, they learned that Barlow had allegedly gotten into an argument with the man before she stabbed him in the stomach with a knife.

The man refused medical treatment and transport to the hospital.

Barlow was arrested at the scene and taken to the county jail.
