NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Excitement is building about the newest principal with the Nacogdoches Independent School District.

Dr. Jackie Briggs-Vaughn is anxious to set her ideas into motion as the new principal for Emeline Carpenter Elementary. The Arkansas native said she's up for the challenge to improve state test scores at the neighborhood school.

Vaughn said her experience growing up in a similar school and neighborhood will create a wider understanding of the “improvement required” state ranking.

"Which I know that this will be an opportunity for me to let the parents in the community know that there's potential in that community because I'm a product from a community like this,” Vaughn said. “And that as a community, we have to work together to bring out the best in all of these students."

On Tuesday, Vaughn had the first of three “meet and greet” sessions. A couple of hours ago, she met with community members. Tomorrow and Thursday she'll meet with staff and Carpenter parents.
