LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A group of East Texans gathered for the annual event Prevention in the Park to shine a light on Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The Family Crisis Center organized the event in hopes to end the rising statistics of sexual assault violence.
The center reports 79 percent of female rape victims are assaulted before the age of 25.
Lufkin Mayor Bob Brown was in attendance. He said generating conversations on these issues is much needed to help find a solution.
"It will encourage someone to step forward and get the idea that sure enough speaking out will help solve these problems and bring the issue forward and that over time, we will have less and less victims involved," Brown said.
In honor of the month dedicated to ending sexual assault, the center has organized various events throughout April.
