LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Women's Networking Event with more than 200 women in attendance Wednesday.
Part of an empowerment project, Junior League of Lufkin showcased 10 middle school girls who had the opportunity to get make-overs and walk the runway.
This year's Athena Leadership Award went to Demetress Harrell, an executive director at the Hospice in the Pines, for her work in the community.
"For the women in our community together, it empowers them and to be able to see each other, it is a true unity within the community, and I believe we are able to show our young people what we want for our future and that is to work hard and to achieve greatness and to give back," Harrell said.
Every year, the Athena Leadership Award is presented to a woman who embraces professional excellence, community service and who actively assists women along with developing professional excellence and leadership skills.
