NACOGDOCHES, Texas (Press Release) -- The Stephen F. Austin Softball team played the first two games of their three-game series against Incarnate Word on Friday, April 21. The first game was an easy 7-2 decision for the Ladyjacks, while game two was decided by a fourth inning go-ahead run scored by junior Autumn Holloway's RBI single up the middle.
The Ladyjacks totaled 18 hits and nine runs in their first doubleheader win of conference play. Freshman Kiriany Hornberger led at the bats for the Ladyjacks going 3-for-6 on the day with a run and four RBI. Hornberger recorded her third homerun of the season during game one. Sophomore Emily Wolfe had the best batting average of the day, going 4-for-5 at the plate scoring two RBI and two runs. Senior Brittany Lewis was 2-for-7 with two RBI, tallying her seven homer of the season, while freshman Katie Clark was 2-for-3 with two runs. Others tagging runs were sophomore Lauren Becker and junior Autumn Holloway, who pinch hit in the second game to tally a RBI.
Wolfe put up the first mark on the board for SFA with a RBI single up the middle that scored Clark in the second inning. The next frame saw Becker single through the left side before Lewis bombed her hit over the centerfield fence for the 3-0 advantage.
A big fourth inning followed with a three RBI homer slammed over the left fence that scored Wolfe and Holloway, putting SFA up by their biggest margin of 6-0. The Cardinals utilized some small ball in the fifth frame to put two runners on before swinging a double to left field cut the `Jacks lead to four runs, 6-2.
Clark and freshman Madison Selman led the Ladyjacks final charge with back-to-back singles. With two on and two outs, Wolfe fired again up the middle to score the insurance run for SFA, capping the game at 7-2.
The second game was managed by small ball attempts SFA led-off the third inning with back-to-back bunts from Wolfe and Clements. Hornberger was at bat next, swinging a single to center field to tag SFA's first run.
UIW fired back scoring a run in the top of the fourth by a single to second base after a double placed a runner in the scoring position. With the scored tied now at 1-1, junior Taylor Fraccastoro hit a lead-off double to start SFA in the bottom of the frame. Holloway would swing the one-out RBI single allowing Fraccastoro to tally the winning run to clench game two at 2-1.
Junior pitcher Callee Guffey claimed the win for game one, moving to 9-9 on the season. She faced 22 batters, scattered four hits, giving up two runs, and striking out four. Junior Mikayla Sikes took the save for the first game after pitching two innings. She allowing three hits and did not give up a run. Freshman Jordan Llinas tossed the second game and grabbed the win to put her at an even 5-5 on the season. Llinas faced 21 batters and scattered only four hits. She gave up one run, while striking out three.
