NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Tonight, dogs ranging from a 200-pound Mastiff down to a petite dachshund are relaxing after a full day at a doggie spa.

Nac K-9 Kleaners happens each Tuesday and Thursday at Nacogdoches High School.

Layla is a handful for sure.

"200 pounds,” a teacher said to a student.

And the ol’ gal certainly would question the name of Small Animal Class. But not enough to cause a fuss. It's her day at Nac K-9 Kleaners.

"You think, ahhh,” a student said to the dog. “This one is actually being really good."

Jerrett Cobb, an agriculture science teacher at NHS, snagged the idea of a doggie spa from an Aggie friend. The hands-on teacher was astounded the limited knowledge his students had about dog breeds.

"They knew what a pit bull was, a Chihuahua and a Labrador,” Cobb, an agriculture science teacher at NHS.

As a result, Cobb decided to bring his own dog, Birdie, an Australian shepherd, to school. Then other teachers ...

"Started bringing dogs in,” Cobb said.

Before long, K-9 Kleaners was launched.

"We walk 'em,” Cobb said. Teaching them commands."

"Birdie, sit,” a student said.

"Playing fetch, those kind of things,” Cobb said.

Morgan Urban discovered a hidden talent. She spends every spare minute with the animals in hopes of one day becoming a vet tech or professional groomer.

"I love animals, especially dogs,” Urban said. “I'm really good with them. So, I enjoy it."

An added bonus for Cobb is his students benefit from the pet therapy.

“My kids that tend to be a little bit more rowdy throughout the day, when the dogs are here they want to focus on this dog,” Cobb said. “They want to be in charge. They like having to do something."

Every class has a role with the animals – all day long.

So when it's all over, the canine customers are just like humans who spend a day at the spa. They just want to relax and lie around.

K-9 Kleaners is limited to bathing and exercising dogs. Students don't have the licenses needed for clipping. The class is winding down with the school year, but you can call NHS to see about grabbing an appointment.

K-9 Kleaners costs$15. The funds help pay for supplies.
