LUFKIN, TX (Press Release)- A two-game lead with six games to play. Two games behind a higher slot in the standings.
That’s the situation in which the Angelina College Roadrunner baseball team finds itself heading into Thursday’s series opener with Northeast Texas Community College. The Roadrunners built their current lead over the Eagles by taking two out of three games against Bossier Parish College last week, but now they’ll have to handle the very team hot on their heels for the final playoff spot in the Region XIV conference’s East Zone.
The Roadrunners are 11-13 in conference play, while the Eagles sit right behind them at 9-13. In addition, AC is just two games behind Paris College for the third-place position. AC will open the three-game series against NTCC at home with a single, nine-inning game on Thursday before completing the series with a doubleheader Saturday in Mount Pleasant. The ‘Runners took two of three from the Eagles in March.
If the weekend’s head-to-head matchup doesn’t decide anything, both AC and NTCC will have to wait until next weekend to determine which team will make the trip to the conference tournament in Grand Prairie scheduled to start on May 12. The Roadrunners will close out the season May 5 and 6 at Paris College, while the Eagles will wrap up their year with a series against Bossier Parish starting on May 4.
Thursday’s game at Roadrunner Field will also serve as Sophomore Day. The ceremony will take place just before the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
