LUFKIN, TX (Press Release)- The Angelina College Roadrunners took some big swings to inch a little closer to a playoff spot, blasting five homers in Thursday’s 13-3, six-inning rout of Northeast Texas Community College Thursday at Roadrunner Field.
The series opening win helped the ‘Runners widen a two-game lead to three in the rush for the final seed in the conference’s East Zone. The series resumes with a doubleheader in Mount Pleasant on Saturday,
The offensive explosion backed a strong outing from former Hudson Hornet Jesse Cravy, who went five and a third innings to earn the win. Cravy allowed three earned runs on six scattered hits, eventually giving way to former Central Bulldog Jarod Sprinkle, who induced an inning-ending double play to close out the sixth.
With AC holding a 2-1 lead in the third following a pair of RBIs from Tucker Redden, Jacob Finke, who finished with four RBI, got the big bats started with a long, three-run homer into the trees behind the left-field fence. After a walk to Christian Leonard, Nathan Miranda lined a two-run shot just inside the pole in left for a 7-1 Roadrunner lead.
Finke’s shot moved him to within two of the program’s all-time individual record for home runs.
In the fourth, Redden, Evian Benjamin Josh Elvir added solo homers. Tony Lima and Christian Leonard drove in late runs to cap the AC scoring.
Following the game, the team recognized sophomores Aaron Bowley, Tony Lima, Nathan Miranda, Cody Cash, Evian Benjamin, Roberto Malinowski, Bailey Holstein, Grant Cox, Tyler Brockner, Tucker Redden, Brett Rogers, C.J. Pye, Josh Elvir and Jacob Finke.
Saturday’s doubleheader in Mount Pleasant is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
