ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

A preliminary autopsy report shows a Lufkin man engaged in a six-hour standoff with law enforcement Monday night died of a single gunshot fired by a law enforcement officer, according to the Angelina County Sheriff's Office.

A final autopsy for Stacy Sturdivant, 46, is pending.

"Sturdivant was actively shooting at law enforcement officers at the time he was shot by a tactical officer," Sheriff Greg Sanches stated in a press release.

The cause of death is listed as a homicide.

"The term 'homicide' in this case does not suggest that something improper occurred," Sanches said. "The term is often used by a forensic pathologist when a person was killed by another person, even when a law enforcement officer's actions were appropriate."

"All attempts to communicate with Sturdivant over a period of hours were unsuccessful and trained negotiators were at the scene," Sanches said. "Repeated attempts by 911 operators to communicate with Sturdivant were also unsuccessful."

Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
