GRAPELAND, TX (KTRE) - Over the weekend, Grapleand ISD voters approved a bond election that will allow the school to build a new elementary school.
The new building will replace the campus that was built in 1955. The bond is for $7.75 million Superintendent Gregg Spivey said the vote barely failed last year but the district listened.
"We knew it was close last year," Spivey said. "We went back and listened to our parents to hear their concerns and make changes where they were needed."
The new school will be built where the baseball field is. The district will build a new baseball field next to the football field. The old campus will remain until the district decides on the future use. Spivey said that the district could repurpose some of the building.
"By building a new construction, we can start from scratch," Spivey said. "Our current facility needed better security, and this will address that. We will also have the latest technology."
Spivey said classes will not be interrupted during construction.
