Police arrested Bennedetha and Joshua Buckjune after a little girl told an adult she was being abused at home. Mrs. Buckjune is accused of repeatedly beating her 13- and 14-year-old stepdaughters with various objects including belt buckles, causing cuts, bruises, and lacerations.
Neighbors are shocked by the allegations, but not completely surprised.
"I don't really know much about them," said Christopher Hooper. "I just know I'd see that little girl out there walking around stealing mail out of people's mailboxes. She'd miss a lot of school and I'd see her out here in the early morning hours walking around, walking dogs. One time I was in the backyard and I heard a lot of screaming."
Child abuse is a problem all across Texas, East Texas is no exception; it even happens in quiet neighborhoods like the one in Crown Colony.
"I hope that they get them out of here. I don't want them here. It's not comfortable at all, especially beside our house. I don't want them by me."
The couple now faces serious charges that could get them plenty of prison time.
Detective John Davis said, "Due to the severity of the beatings they were taking and the frequency of the beatings they were taking, it was pretty bad. They were a little bit skinnier than the other children, so it looks like they might have been a little bit malnourished."
Joshua Buckjune is out of jail on bond. Bennedetha Buckjune is in the Angelina County jail facing several charges, including injury to a child.
