Man who allegedly drove car through Times Square charged with murder

NEW YORK (RNN) - Richard Rojas, who allegedly drove a speeding car through a crowd in Times Square Thursday, has been charged with 1 count of murder, 20 counts of attempted murder and five counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, CNN reports. The attack killed an 18-year-old woman and injured at least 22 people, 

Many of the victims were carted off on stretchers and four people were in critical condition but likely to survive, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. 

The deceased was identified as Alyssa Elsman, an 18-year-old from Michigan. 

The incident was not an considered act of terrorism, Rojas, a resident of the Bronx and a Navy veteran. was taken into custody, NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said

Rojas had two prior arrests for DWI.

According to the Associated Press, the suspect initially tested negative for alcohol, but other tests would be run to determine if he was high.

The vehicle drove against traffic and onto the sidewalk when it struck the pedestrian. It crashed into a pole on 45th Street and Broadway, where it stopped with two of its wheels in the air.

Police placed Times Square on lockdown.
