LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - More than two dozen East Texas community members walked for a cause on Saturday.
A nationwide movement to bring awareness to suicide prevention, Out of the Darkness Walk, shines a light on those who died of suicide.
Families and friends started the walk at the Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin after the rain stopped for the third annual event.
Organizers said they choose to focus on the life lived on individuals rather than how they took their own lives.
"I think it's something that's a little hard for people to talk about. There's a bit of stigma attached to it," said Jennifer Winston, a coordinator of the walk. "I think people support you in a different way depending on how your loved one passed, and it's really not too fair."
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention said the Out of the Darkness Walks are proof that when people work together they can make big changes in the world.
