Reports Show Alarming Numbers For HIV

by Jessica Cervantez

There are alarming numbers about HIV infections. New reports show that more than 80% of women infected with HIV are African American.

But locally, prevention specialists don't believe the percentage is that high. African Americans make-up bout 54% of the total number of people infected with HIV in East Texas.

How the number of infections get reported has a big impact.

Beverly Chatman, the prevention services director for Health Horizons, said, "We are on a reporting system like Planned Parenthood and other agencies, so it would look like an increase, because that's where a lot of the minorities go for services."

Private physicians and hospitals may or may not report the number of people infected with the disease.
