JASPER, TX (KTRE) -

Officers with the Jasper Police Department are investigating a shooting incident that occurred Sunday evening and resulted in one man getting sent to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

The two men involved in the shooting incident got into an argument over a woman and fired shots at each other, according to a press release from the Jasper Police Department.

The shooting incident occurred at about 5 p.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of J.H. Rowe Street, the press release stated. Jasper PD officers were dispatched out to the scene in reference to a shooting, and when they got there, they found Rushun Young, 23, suffering from a gunshot wound to his stomach.

During the course of the investigation, the JPD officers learned that Brandon Tukes, 22, had shot Young over an ongoing personal dispute. A Jasper PD detective learned that Tukes, the suspect had been standing in the street near the home, and the victim was standing on the porch.

After the two men got into an argument, they exchanged gunfire, and Young was hit in the abdomen, the press release stated. Although there were numerous people also standing in the yard of the residence during the exchange of gunfire, no one else was injured.

“It is unknown at this time who fired the first round,” the press release stated.

Young was taken by personal vehicle to the Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment.

“According to witnesses the subjects were involved in a physical altercation at another address earlier in the day which escalated over the course of the day,” the press release stated. “The conflict appears to be related to relationship issues involving both male subjects and a common female subject.”

According to the press release, Jasper PD investigators have recovered all of the guns used in the shooting incident and conducted interviews with the people that were involved.

“At this time, the victim is refusing to cooperate with police in the investigation and is not pursuing charges,” the press release stated. “This is still an ongoing investigation with other charges possibly being pursued even without the cooperation of the victim and witnesses.”
