Crockett hospital still in limbo, clinic gets new life

CROCKETT, TX (KTRE) - Rural healcare in Crockett has been in limbo for several weeks after Little River Healthcare announced a sudden closure of the Crockett hospital.

Citizens in Houston County were given some relief on Tuesday night when the Houston County Hospital Board voted to negotiate a lease with CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Francis for space on the second floor of the hospital building. If a lease deal is reached, the new clinic would take over the space formally known as the rural health clinic. The board announced that they believe the move could be complete in the next two weeks.

Board President Deborah Blackwell said the hospital has not lost its certification.

"When a hospital is closed sue to ownership moving out, the board has 10 days to find something else or they can loose their accreditation," Blackwell said. "We went to Austin and had a meeting and we were able to get a 60-day waiver. We now have until September 30th to formulate a plan and submit it for our accreditation to still be good. We are still working on that."
