FRISCO, Texas – With less than one month remaining until the Stephen F. Austin volleyball team begins its 2017 season, two members of the squad earned some preseason recognition from the Southland Conference Tuesday afternoon.
Senior libero Lexus Cain and sophomore setter Ann Hollas each received spots on the All-Southland Conference Preseason Teams it was announced by the league office via a press release. Cain captured preseason All-Southland First Team accolades while Hollas was tabbed a preseason All-Southland Second Team selection.
Entering her final season in a Ladyjack uniform, Cain stepped in as the team's go-to libero in 2016 and proceeded to become one of the best in the Southland Conference at that position. The Amarillo, Texas, product led a back row that ranked fifth nationally and first in the Southland in terms of digs per set (18.00).
Individually, Cain averaged 5.22 digs per set last season – a figure that led the 13-team league and ranked 14th among all other NCAA Division I volleyball players. In all, Cain racked up 564 digs one season ago, which was the fourth-highest total in the Southland Conference and helped her be recognized as an All-Southland Conference Second Team choice at the conclusion of the 2016 regular season.
What can only be considered an impressive debut season for Hollas in 2016 resulted in the Longview, Texas, product receiving the title of Southland Conference Freshman of the Year.
Upon taking over as the team's primary setter midway through September of 2016, Hollas directed an SFA offense that averaged a league-leading 38.05 attacks per set. She passed out a team-best 8.56 assists per set and proved to be an asset on defense, too, by scooping up 2.22 digs per set. Not only was Hollas the first SFA player to receive the title of Southland Conference Freshman of the Year since 2005, she also took home All-Southland Conference Honorable Mention honors at the conclusion of her debut collegiate season.
The Ladyjacks' open the 2017 campaign in 25 days by making a trip to DeLand, Fla., for a three-match swing at the Stetson Invitational. SFA's first opponent of the season will be Florida Atlantic with the two teams scheduled to do battle at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25.
