LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Staff and faculty from two Lufkin ISD schools engaged in a poverty simulation Wednesday to understand the stresses of living in low-income conditions.
The Junior League of Lufkin conducted the simulation called Living on the Edge with a group of educators.
The organization said in Angelina County alone the poverty rate is at 19.4 percent which means approximately 16,000 of residents live below the poverty line.
"We're not presuming to say that this experience is actually what the realities are, but it's a way for the teachers and staff to just walk a mile in their students' shoes to experience what it's like for their parents and their family members. That have to live, paycheck to paycheck," said Sharon Kruk, community relations with Junior League of Lufkin.
Participants interacted with social service agencies, grocers, pawnbrokers, bill collectors and others during the course of their simulation.
