CROCKETT, TX (KTRE) -

Deputies with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 72-year-old woman on Aug. 11 after a grand jury indicted her on a first-degree felony theft charge in connection to allegations that she stole more than $100,000 from a couple’s estates.

Mary Elaine Shiflett Stephens, of Waxahachie, was booked in to the Houston County Jail on a first-degree theft of $300,000 or more charge, according to jail records. She has since posted a $10,000 bail amount and has been released from the jail.

The Houston County grand jury met on June 30 in the 349th Judicial District Court.

The text of the indictment for Stephens’ second-degree theft charge stated that she stole between $100,00 and $200,000 from “the estates of Vencie and Melba Beard” over a period of time from June of 2012 through February 10, 2016.
