JASPER, TX (KTRE) -

An early morning fire at an East Texas pet store killed all the animals and destroyed the building.

Jasper volunteer fire department responded to the call at 2:33 a.m. Officials said a caller reported smoke coming out from the back of the business.

One resident said it's devastating to see the pet store in ashes.

"Thinking of all the animals inside. Because he had ferrets, hamsters and rabbits, all kinds of fish. He had all kinds of animals in there and thinking of them burning alive is really, really sad," said Cecil Cottongin, a customer.

Authorities said the cause of the fire is unknown.
