LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Five Lufkin restaurants are joining forces to provide free, hot meals for Harvey evacuees, first responders, and any volunteers helping with relief efforts today at 4 p.m.
Cafe Del Rio, Chick-Fil-A, Chili's, Cotton Patch, and Olive Garden have teamed up to provide the meals, which will be served at Lufkin's Courtyard Marriott, which is located at 2130 South First Street. The meals will be served in the hotel's banquet room. Lufkin Coca-Cola, Lufkin Pepsi, and Starbucks are helping with the effort as well.
"We're the only Olive Garden restaurant still open in our region," said Shay Smith, a manager at Olive Garden. "We can't do anything to help them, so we're doing as much as we can to help the people here in Lufkin."
Smith said they expecting to feed between 500 and 700 people. She said the Courtyard Marriott has 300 people who fled from Southeast Texas in the wake of the flooding caused by Harvey, which is now being classified as a tropical storm.
If evacuees have transportation issues, the Clawson Assembly of God has donated the use of its church buses to be used to shuttle people to the Courtyard Marriott if needed, Smith said.
Shay said that Farmers Insurance representatives will be on hand to hand out information including step-by-step guides to filing insurance claims and dealing with FEMA.
If the staff at Angelina County hotels and motels with evacuees from Southeast Texas need more information, Smith said they can reach her at (936) 404-3022.
