NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The Nacogdoches Rotary Club is responding this week with a partial solution for Beaumont residents who are still without clean water.
Water comes in bottles, but there's a more efficient way to provide it.
When flooding in Beaumont shorted out the main water-pumping station there became an immediate need for purified water. Bottled water distribution is ongoing, but there is a longer-lasting option.
"The all-in-one filter is great for emergency preparedness kits," a Sawyer promotional video says.
On Friday, Beaumont native and Nacogdoches Rotarian Kent Hutchison will be delivering 2,600 Sawyer water filters to the Rotary Club of Bridge City at Orangefield for distribution.
"These filters are individual filters that go on a bottom of a bucket that will clean water," Hutchison said. "It will clean swamp water. It will really do a great service. These are filters we normally use internationally, but this is one of the first times we deployed them in a domestic situation."
It's Disaster Aid USA, a Rotarian operated project, that provides immediate disaster relief. Sawyer and other manufacturers are partners providing low cost emergency support.
Wayne Beaumier is a Disaster Aid Response Team leader for the Houston Rotary zone. Taking a break from pulling sheet rock and carpet, the humanitarian is drumming up more volunteers from across East Texas.
"VolunteerHouston.org, that's where you can register as a volunteer," Beaumier said. "And whether you go with Rotary or go with another organization we just want people out there mucking and gutting these homes."
In all, 75 agencies are registered. Disaster Aid Response Teams show up with a trailer full of tools. On the other end is someone with a helper's attitude.
"There are 160,000 homes already documented damaged," Beaumier said. "It's not a sprint. It's a marathon."
For the next week, Nacogdoches Rotary will be collecting cleaning supplies and funds for more water purification kits. This week the club donated $3,000 toward the cause.
