NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The Nacogdoches Police Department is investigating a body that was found in a wooded area between the Recreation Center and Ferguson Street Thursday afternoon.
Sgt. Greg Sowell, a spokesman for the Nacogdoches Police Department, said NPD got a call from a resident on Ferguson Street about a strong odor that was coming from behind the person's home. When the resident investigated, he or she found a man's body.
"Officers responded and entered a wooded area behind the recreation center and between the center and Ferguson Street," Sowell said. "The victim was in a very advanced stage of decomposition."
Sowell said that the police department has made a tentative identification in the case. He added that an autopsy has been ordered, and a positive ID will be made on the body at that time.
"It is believed that the man died two or three weeks ago," Sowell said. "The cause and manner of death will be determined by the judge following the autopsy reports. No obvious signs of foul play were present."
Nacogdoches PD officers are trying to locate the man's next of kin, Sowell said.
"There is no relation between this death and the sheltering of evacuees at the rec center one week ago," Sowell said.
