LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Bull riders and fans from across East Texas came out to the arena at Crosstimbers Cowboy Church on Highway 69 to remember those that were killed 16 years ago in the Sept.11 terrorist attacks.
The event was a way to kick off the monthly bull riding events the church will do.
"This is for all the victims of 911 and the families," pastor Ford Adkins said. "This is our way at the Cowboy church to honor their memories."
For the church, they believe the event embodies the American spirit that was seen in the days and months that followed the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans in New York City, Washington D.C. and on a plane that crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
"It commemorates the western heritage and what our nation was founded on, our christian principals and also sports and rodeo," Adkins said. "The rodeo road and the rodeo life is something that is special to me and this church and we want to bring that to others.
The events will continue on the second Sunday of every month.
