Friday marked National POW and MIA Recognition Day. The annual event honors missing service members and their families.

Outside the Nacogdoches library, a Missing Man Table Ceremony was held at the Vietnam Memorial.

A second marker was erected at the site Friday.

It shares the Vietnam War story of Private First Class Oscar P. Austin of the United States Marine Corp.

The Congressional Medal of Honor recipient threw himself in the line of fire to save the life of a fellow Marine. In doing so, Austin was mortally wounded. His family is pleased to keep his legacy alive.

"I think nowadays a lot of the folks brought up, they don't understand what people have been through and they forget,” said Ramona Kimble-Tutt, Officer Austin's cousin.“So it's a good thing to have something like this. That you know what happened then."

Numerous members of Austin's family have served in the military and in public service.
