Construction Has Started On Landfill Remedy

Construction has started on a remedy to stop gases from escaping the Angelina County landfill.

A 1,000 foot methane vent trench will be finished by next week. During routine monitoring several months ago, scientists discovered landfill compounds were above groundwater protection standards, and methane gas was seeping into groundwater at the site.

The trench will fix both of those problems.

Hydrex geologist, Trae Scarborough, said, "What happens is, the methane migrates from the cell outward and the interceptor trench intercepts and catches the methane and vents it out through the uprights."

The methane vent trench is a $62,000 project.
