NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

About 500 people sat down to a free community wide thanksgiving meal in Nacogdoches Monday night.

On Monday morning, volunteers carved numerous turkeys.

They were cooked by other volunteers who represent churches city wide.

The Nacogdoches Ministerial Alliance will serve the food.

A group at Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s kitchen has helped out for at least 10 years.

"To do something that we feel the alliance benefits from and that is that all the people who belong to all these different churches have an opportunity also to meet each other and to share food for Thanksgiving,” said Martha Labbit, a volunteer.

The community Thanksgiving service started at six o'clock at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Appleby Sand Road. The dinner immediately follows, and it is usually around 7 p.m.
