Change Is Near For Texas Barbers And Beauticians

Hundreds of area barbers and cosmetologists spent Tuesday in Lufkin. They came to speak out about the future of regulations in Texas.

The barbering and cosmetology industries are about to undergo their most significant changes in many years. Tuesday's workshops gave East Texas professionals a chance to hear details about what is happening.

One goal is to make sure the regulations are fair and reasonable for everyone, especially when it comes to health and safety issues.

William Kuntz Jr., executive director of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, said, "There've been some inconsistencies in the past and the shops need to be inspected on a regular basis, so you've got the eye of the state to make sure the health and safety is maintained."

Governor Rick Perry signed a bill in June transferring regulation of the cosmetology and barbering professions from two state agencies to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
