Escaped Fugitive Caught In Diboll

Polk County authorities are resting a little easier. A man who had been on the run is now back in jail. Robert Lee Briggs Jr. had escaped custody a couple of weeks ago in Livingston, soon after he was sentenced to 20 years in prison on drug charges.

The escape happened at the Polk County Courthouse after authorities unlocked his handcuffs so he could go to the rest room. After he came out, he ran off. Thanks to a Crimestoppers tip, Briggs was found at his girlfriend's residence in Diboll this morning.

"After a short time, Robert Briggs responded to the knock, and opened the door just a little bit. The Chief asked him to finish opening the door, turn around, and place his hands on his head. He was subsequently arrested without incident," says Polk County Sheriff Kenneth Hammack.

Along with Briggs, his girlfriend, Casonya Johnson, was also arrested. She is charged with harboring a fugitive from justice as well as a class B marijuana charge. Briggs is charged with escape, a third degree felony.
