A week after having the game of the year against Lufkin, the Longview Lobos season came to an end in another thriller.
Longview lost to Waco Midway 28-26 in the 6A DII semi-final. Both teams battled the other and a chilly, rainy night.
Longview got on the board first after a high snap sent the ball out of the end zone on a punt attempt. Midway would answer back after quarterback Tanner Mordecai found CJ WIlliams on a slant route.
Longview would get down by 15 points and battle back.
Longview scored to bring it to 28-26 late in the fourth but failed to get the two point conversion.
It looked like the game was out of reach after Haynes King threw an interception but Midway would then fumble the ball. With time winding down, Longview had a field goal attempt to grab the lead with only 7 seconds left. The kick had the distance but went wide left.
It is the fourth year that Longview's playoff season has ended on a missed field goal. After the game, Head Coach John King tried to remain positive about the game despite the negative outcome.
"Everybody sold our kids short but nobody is going to play harder," King said. "We came up short but we left it on the field. Even down 15, we battled back and got within striking distance and had another chance and the good Lord shined on us and gave us one more chance. Our kids got after it today and I am really pleased. Your heart breaks for them because for 44 seniors, they wont get another chance at this."
Midway now moves onto to play Cy-Fair in the 6A DII State Championship next Saturday at AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
