KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Kansas City man faces charges in connection with stealing a car that had a child inside on New Year's Eve.

Kenneth  A. Alexander, 37, faces the child kidnapping and stealing a motor vehicle. Prosecutors requested a bond of $75,000.

According to court records, Belton police made contact with Alexander not long after it was reported in Kansas City that a child was in the back of a vehicle that was taken at gunpoint in the 3500 block of Prospect Avenue.

Alexander told Belton police he stole the car and needed directions back to Kansas City.

The child was found unharmed in the back seat.

A woman had parked the jeep near the Mid-K Beauty supply at 35th Street and Prospect around 11 a.m.

She was inside the store for a few minutes when a man got into her jeep and told the older children to get out.

The suspect sped off, causing the passenger door to slam shut before the kids could get a baby boy out of the back seat.

A woman at the scene held one of the children back, who was trying to chase after the vehicle.
