NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Officers with the Nacogdoches Police Department arrested two Tennessee women on money laundering charges after a traffic stop on Northwest Stallings Drive Tuesday night.
A probable cause search of the vehicle turned up a "large amount" of bundled cash in a box on the back seat, according to one of the affidavits.
Krystal R. Hatchett, 27, and Christine O. Strong, 27, both of Memphis, Tennessee, were each charged with third-degree felony money laundering between $20,000 and $100,000. Both women are still being held in the Nacogdoches County Jail, and the bond amount has been set at $50,000 for each of them.
According to one of the arrest affidavits, an NPD officer stopped a vehicle in the 1400 block of Northwest Stallings at about 8 p.m. Tuesday. When the officer went to speak to the driver of the vehicle, he noticed the smell of marijuana coming from it.
"During a probable cause search of the vehicle, the officer located a large amount of U.S. currency in a box on the rear seat," the affidavit stated. "The currency was bundled and packaged in a manner officer knows is consistent with criminal activity."
Neither woman knew how much money was in the box, and they didn't have any banking documentation, the affidavit stated. In addition, the women gave consistent details about their travels.
