Wells Girls Basketball forced to forfeit remainder of season, will miss playoffs

WELLS, TX (KTRE) -

Despite locking up a playoff position in the 1A Girls Basketball playoffs, the Wells Lady Pirates will not be going.

Wells ISD Superintendent Jim Moore confirmed the news Wednesday.

"We had eight girls on the team and had been doing good," Moore said. "We went into the break with that many and came back with eight players. We had one player move out of district then we had one become ineligible.

"After our win over Chester we had third place locked up but then we had two girls quit the team for personal reasons. That left us with four players left.  To finish the year would have been one thing but with short notice for playoffs we couldn't fill the team.  hate. I hate it for the school. I hate it for the coaching staff. It is very frustrating that we got this far. Having to give up a spot in the playoffs is counter productive to what we want to do."

Moore said the team will be fine for next season with a strong group of 8th graders coming up.
