SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A contentious race between Republican candidates for the Smith County District Attorney seat has come to a close.

Jacob Putman garnered almost 13,000 votes, topping Alicia Barkley.

No Democrat filed to run against Putman in the general election. Candidates have until August to file to run as an independent in the general election.

Putman had little to say about his win, but he did credit those who supported him.

“It was really law enforcement, they came to me and asked me if I would run because they know how I try my cases. And after a lot of prayer and talking with my wife, we decided this is what He was calling us to do. He’s been really faithful,” Putman said.

He says he would also like to revamp the way prosecutors are trained so taxpayers can have a good return on their investment.

“I really want to bring everyone together in the community - law enforcement, the citizens. There is a lot of misinformation out there and I want everyone to know that I’m going to work hard," he said.

Barkley lost by about 2,700 votes, and had some advice for Putman.

“I would ask him to please pay more attention to violent offenders, and please listen to victims," she said.

Barkley joined the race for the district attorney's office on the final day of candidate filing in December.

“Obviously I am disappointed. I felt very strongly that this is what I needed to do, that Smith County needed a choice,” she said.

Both candidates say although the race has been heated, they both agree on one thing, residents in Smith County deserve the best representation.
